Parenting Your Way Through Ramadan

Parenting Your Way Through Ramadan

Last Thursday we hosted an Instagram live with Mentor, Wasan Altikriti.  The topic we discussed was, “Parenting Your Way Through Ramadan”. Covid-19 has made Ramadan extremely difficult for everyone. Usually during Ramadan families come together, pray taraweeh in congregation at the mosque and so on. During Covid, mosque activities have been put on pause and gatherings are limited and in some countries still prohibited. Many countries, such as Jordan, are also still facing lockdowns, making it even harder to see family or experience a normal Ramadan. Wasan said, “This past year has been a time of testing and healing. It has made us discover so much and look within ourselves… before the pandemic we were getting carried away with the distractions of life and Covid really allowed us to pause”.  So much hurt has happened from the pandemic but at the same time we were forced to slow down and appreciate what we have in our lives. We held onto our loved ones and appreciated the little things in life.

Having a support system is so important when it comes to parenting. Wasan says, “We need a support system, whether that be a spouse, mother, or even external help. Parenting is hard on it’s own”. Social media has given us so many distractions especially for moms. “Social media is becoming very overwhelming as a mom. Competing for the best Ramadan decor and place settings can affect the way we think”. These distractions are making us worry about things that don’t even matter. We need to take a step back and think about what the true meaning of Ramadan is. She continues to say that if we feel like social media is making us question ourselves or affecting us in a bad way then we need to remove these distractions from our life. Nothing against parents who are very artistically talented, but comparing ourselves constantly can be overwhelming. The best thing we can do is focus on the true meaning of Ramadan and put away any distractions that may be affecting our parenting.
