Our day to day lives can be so hectic that we put aside our relationship with Allah (swt). We tend to focus on our worldly duties and forget about our spiritual duties which should matter more. This dunya is only temporary and is so insignificant to the hereafter. In Surat Al-Mulk (67:2), Allah (swt) says, “ [He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving”. This basically states that this dunya is only a test for each and everyone one of us. The reason we are on this Earth is to prove our loyalty and follow the right path as expressed by the Quran.
What does it mean to follow the right path? We can start by following the five pillars of Islam.
- Shahada, Profession of Faith.
- 5 Daily Prayers.
- Zakat or Alms.
- Fasting.
- Pilgrimage to Mecca (for those whose circumstances permit.)
There are other ways to show your appreciation and loyalty to Allah (swt). One way is through dhikr, or remembrance of Allah (swt). This can be by making dua, saying astaghfirullah, or bismillah. A great way to show remembrance to Allah (swt) is reading the Quran. The Quran is quite literally the words of Allah (swt). Islam is a way of life and not just some textbook rules and regulations. When you truly understand Islam, the way you live your life will significantly change. Your hatred will turn into love while your mercilessness will turn into forgiveness. To learn about love is to educate yourself about the one who created us from love.
